Post 9/11 GI Bill - Active Duty (Chapter 33)

Commonly known as Post 9-11 GI Bill, this bill provides up to 36 months of education assistance based on your active duty service post 9/10/2001. The assistance available under each category may vary depending on your particular situation and length of active duty. This assistance may be used for degree and certificate programs at VCU. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances. Generally, assistance is payable for 36 months of full-time attendance up to 15 years following your release from active duty.

How to Apply
If you are applying for Veterans Administration (VA) education assistance for the first time:

1. Complete VCU’s Veterans Affairs (VA) Education Assistance form (pdf).
2. Attach a copy of your VCU admission letter to the application.
3. Attach a completed Veterans Affairs Application for VA Education Benefits (VA Form 22-1990) to the packet. VA Form 22-1990 can be obtained from the VCU Veterans Affairs Office or by visiting www.gibill.va.gov.
4. Attach a completed VCU Veterans Educational Benefits Transfer Credits Evaluation Form (pdf) to the packet.
5. Attach the Member Copy 4 of your DD Form 214 to the packet.
6. Submit the application packet to the VCU Veterans Affairs Office. Your enrollment will be certified and your application packet will be reviewed and forwarded to the regional Veterans Affairs Office.
7. When you receive your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) and award letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs, provide a copy of each to the VCU Veterans Affairs Office.

If you have received VA education assistance at VCU previously:

1. Complete the VCU Veterans Affairs (VA) Education Assistance Application (pdf).
2. Submit the application to the VCU Veterans Affairs Office. Your enrollment will be certified and your application will be reviewed and forwarded to the regional Veterans Administration Office.

If you have received VA education assistance previously at another college or university but not at VCU:

1. Complete the VCU Veterans Affairs (VA) Education Assistance Application (pdf).
2. Attach a copy of your VCU admission letter to the application.
3. Attach a completed Veterans Administration’s Request for Change of Program or Place of Training (VA Form 22-1995) to the application.
4. Attach a completed VCU Veterans Educational Benefits Transfer Credits Evaluation Form to the application (pdf).
5. Attach the Member Copy 4 of your DD Form 214 to the application.
6. Submit the application packet to the VCU Veterans Affairs Office. Your enrollment will be certified and your application packet will be reviewed and forwarded to the regional Veterans Administration Office.
7. When you receive your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) and award letter from the Veterans Administration, provide a copy of each to the VCU Veterans Affairs Office.
