Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
SAP Requirements for Graduate Students
This category of students includes masters, post-masters, doctoral and certain graduate certificate programs.
- The student's cumulative GPA must be at least a 3.0
- The student earns less than 67% of their overall attempted hours (transfer hours are included)
- Number of credit hours attempted in relation to number of credit hours necessary to complete the degree or certification program (including transfer credit)
Example: A student who is in a graduate degree program would be sent a SAP suspension letter at the point his or her cumulative GPA falls below 3.0.
Medical, dental and pharmacy students at the professional level who are required by their academic deans to repeat a year are permitted to continue on financial aid for that year. Students must also meet the GPA requirements of their respective programs in order to maintain financial aid eligibility.
To ensure timely processing, the SAP Appeal form should be submitted to the VCU Office of Financial Aid within 30 days after receiving the suspension letter.
